This all new design is revolutionizing the experience of growing live butterflies at home or in the class room. In fact, many common weeds are host plants, so they should not all be eradicated. You must also be careful about when and where you use both herbicides and insecticides if you want butterflies to flourish in your yard. Host plants are going to be eaten to the point of unsightliness, and you may want to hide them amongst other plants. Of course you have to accept that this part of your butterfly garden will look a little shabby, especially by late summer. Pickiest of all is the zebra swallowtail, whose caterpillars only feed on one species of plant, the pawpaw. Tiger swallowtail caterpillars prefer leaves from such trees as tulip poplar, cherry and magnolia, while spicebush swallowtails choose the aromatic leaves of sassafras and spicebush. The young of the black swallowtail will eat a variety of plants in the carrot family, so they are often found munching on your parsley, dill, fennel or carrot plants, but they will also eat Queen Anne’s lace and golden Alexander. Other butterflies have different host plants. There are a number of milkweeds that can be cultivated easily here - the drought-tolerant orange butterfly weed, the tall pink-flowered swamp milkweed, and the colony-forming common milkweed, as well as the orange-flowered tropical milkweed. Milkweeds also produce flowers that are an excellent nectar source, and they are visited by many other species of butterflies. Birds who might prey on them soon learn to recognize monarchs and steer clear when looking for a tasty snack. Milkweeds also provide monarchs with protection from predation, as a steady diet of milkweed leaves results in both caterpillar and butterfly having a nasty taste. In late summer, female monarchs can often be observed laying eggs on the lower surface of milkweed leaves, and soon the striped caterpillars are feeding voraciously on the plants. These are called host plants, and probably the most familiar are the milkweeds, which provide food for monarch caterpillars. Butterflies are important pollinators for many plants, and they are delightful to watch - so no good butterfly garden would be complete without the plants they eat during their caterpillar stage.Īfter mating, female butterflies seek out specific plants on which to deposit their eggs so that food will be readily available to the hungry little caterpillars when they hatch. But those caterpillars, like the ugly duckling, will grow up to be beautiful and welcome inhabitants of your garden. To most gardeners, caterpillars are not a welcome sight … especially when they’re munching away on your plants.
